Week 1 Problem A

Post  Archis on Wed Oct 08, 2008 5:39 am

The first problem:

Interesting thing about the first date of the new millennium, 01/01/00 - when the digits of that date are added, it's the smallest possible sum of any date. What date during the next century, when written in that form, will have the greatest possible sum of its digits?

My solution:
Spoiler:
The answer is 38.

Remember you want the most 9's in your answer to get the greatest sum of digits. And then again there is the restriction of being only in the next millennium.

The date would be 09/29/99 giving a digital sum of 38.

Well...

Spoiler:
Out of simple reasoning, you can find that the year will be 2099.

??/??/99

For the month, you have the highest month, 12. However, you are adding the digits up, therefore, you should use 09.

09/??/99

As for the day, you want one with a nine in it:

09
19
29

Obviously, you want 29.

So, my answer in 9/29/99

Yay!

Spoiler:
The answer is 9/29/99. 9 is clearly the highest sum since 10, 11, and 12 add together as 1,2, and 3. 29 is the highest for a similar reason and the 99th year is the last year in the century.
